How Often Should You Be Washing Your Hair?
Not As Often As You May Think!

Let’s get one thing clear, straight off the bat; You should be SHOWERING EVERYDAY and taking a shower is not the same thing as washing your hair.

Now that that’s out of the way, Hollywood celebrity experts have given their two cents on the matter of how often one should wash their hair. Hint: It’s not everyday, or even every other day!

Although opinion between the experts is divided on , the overwhelming advice leans towards avoiding too much hair washing.

“Washing your hair too often is drying and damaging. Many shampoos contain harsh chemicals like sulphates that are used to create lather”, says Adir Abergel, Celebrity Hairstylist and Creative Director for Virtue in USA.

Daily washing is particularly bad for longer hair, according to Toni & Guy International Artistic Director, Philipp Haug.

“For shorter hair, it’s not as bad as the hair is more virginal”, he says. “Overall, washing your hair too often will strip the hair of its natural oils and can dull hair colour.

As a general rule, most experts recommend washing your hair every 2-3 days. This will, of course, vary depending on your hair type.

If you’ve fallen into the cycle of daily washing it may take some time to adjust to lengthier in-between periods, as your hair oil glands are likely to be overstimulated, creating ‘oily hair’. In simple terms, this means the more often you wash your hair, the more your hair will get used to it and get oilier faster.

But if you can manage to stick it out, your hair will reset and you’ll find you can go longer between washes without the greasy feeling.

 ■ The next question is how often should you use dry shampoo?

Because you’ll need to do something to keep the greasiness at bay until the next wash.Though we shouldn’t be reliant on dry shampoo , it’s safe to use consecutively on your non-wash days for 3-4 days. Especially if it’s a lightweight formula. And it’s important to only spray the product only where it’s absolutely necessary.

It’s also best to use cooler water to wash your hair, when you do decide do. While sulphates can strip your hair and scalp of its natural, moisturising oils, having the heat cranked up on your shower can do the same. The cooler the temperature of the water you rinse with, the better shape your hair will be in afterwards.

So in short, wash your hair less to achieve optimal hair health, use dry shampoo sparsely and when you do wash, aim for a cooler water temperature to lock in shine and stop your hair from stripping it’s natural, healthy oils.
