7 Things To Avoid After a Facial
Facials are a great way to get your skin cleansed and are important for ridding your skin of all the toxins that you face every day. Post facial, here are a few things you should avoid
Caring for your skin is important this day in age, especially with all the toxins and impurities that our skin is faced with on a daily basis. Facials combat the toll of environmental damage, stress and even our guilty skincare habits so it is important to indulge in them once in a while. Getting a facial should be a completely blissful experience, from being pampered with all types of sumptuous oils to the sleep-inducing scalp massage. But did you know that facial after care is also a thing?
Should you go out in the sun, can you exfoliate after a facial, and can you indulge in your usual skincare routine? There are so many questions and feelings of uncertainty that can prevail after your facial and so, we decided to round up some tip and post facial no-no’s to avoid which could lead to the reversal of and benefits the facial may have.
1. Skip heavy makeup and skincare products
After a facial, it is likely that your skin can turn red from the exfoliation or extractions during the facial. And with that, you might be tempted to cover up with your heaviest concealer or foundation but this is a big NO! Your facial provides a full cleanse and your face should be kept free of heavy products or makeup for at least two days. Following a facial, your pores are more open than normal and therefore susceptible to more bacteria. Taking a break from makeup will also allow the serums, creams, or peels that were used to be more effective.
2. Cleanse Gently
Remember, your skin is ultrasensitive after a facial so you’ll want to go easy on it. The serums and physical manipulation of the skin during the facial can disrupt the skin barrier so it’s best to stick to gentle, hydrating cleansers.
3. Skip the Toner
This step should definitely be skipped if the toner is alcohol based or contains exfoliating or astringent ingredients. Using one post facial can cause irritation or dryness of the skin. After a facial you shouldn’t need to use toner anyway since your aesthetician already did a deep clean and brought your skin back in balance.
4. Reschedule your workout
If you didn’t get a chance to work out before your facial, then you may be tempted to do it right after your facial. But hold off for at least a day. The increased heat in the skin and sweat can be irritating to your freshly exfoliated skin so it’s best to avoid it.
5. Lay off the exfoliators and face scrubs
Exfoliating is great but just not when you’ve had a facial. Over-exfoliating can damage your skin’s protective layer and can lead to inflammation. Since most facials incorporate an exfoliant—either chemical or physical—it is recommended to skip anything that could irritate your skin for several days after getting one. Stick with a gentle facial cleanser instead.
6. Stay out of the sun
If you’re planning to sunbathe or head to the beach, you need to cancel your plans stat - unless you plan on hiding behind a wide-brimmed hat the whole time. Because your skin has just been exfoliated it is more sensitive and vulnerable to the sun’s harmful rays. After a few days you can worry less about your skin reacting negatively to the sun, but it’s still smart to wear a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day.
7. Postpone your waxing/ laser treatment
Your aesthetician will give you the green light for hair-removal procedures on your face depending on how intensely you were exfoliated during your facial, but a good rule of thumb is to wait at least a week. Waxing especially exfoliates the skin, and over-exfoliation will make it more likely that the wax will lift the skin and leave you with an ugly scab instead of beautifully groomed brows.
